A quarterback duel between Sam Hartman and DJ Uiagalelei could have taken place in the Sun Bowl. Instead, two quarterbacks making their first starts of the season will be on display when No. 16 Notre Dame takes on No. 19 Oregon State in El Paso, Texas on Friday. Hartman of Notre Dame withdrew out of the competition to prepare for the NFL draft, while Uiagalelei of Oregon State entered the transfer portal. In addition, Beavers backup quarterback Aidan Chiles entered the portal and chose Michigan State, which had just hired Jonathan Smith away from Oregon State as head coach.
