On transfer deadline day, Sunderland secured the acquisition of French defender Timothee Pembele, but what can fans expect?
The 20-year-old right-back joined the Black Cats from PSG for an unknown amount and signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light.
We spoke with French football analyst Jonathan Johnson, who reports for CBS, to learn more about Pembele’s credentials.
Pembele is what kind of player?
He is a versatile defender who plays full-back or wing-back most of the time, attempting to advance while maintaining defensive accountability.
Actually, he was much below Achraf Hakimi and Nordi Mukiele in PSG’s pecking order.
Why did PSG let him leave?
He has had problems breaking through at the senior level, and he also sustained a severe injury while on loan with Bordeaux, which has hampered his progress, according to JJ. Even with a full season on loan, it would have been difficult for him to make the switch. Without it, though, Pembele would be unable to make up the ground he had lost.”
What are his primary strengths and areas for development?
He moves the ball well and has a decent eye for a pass, but JJ notes that he lacks strength and has to improve his delivery.
He could still succeed, but he needs a little more self-assurance and a new start.
Do you believe he’s ready for a move to England’s Championship?
He isn’t the most physically talented player, as I mentioned, so the pace of games might surprise him.Given his background and education, he will have a strong tactical understanding of the game, and with a few French talents already on the team—including fellow PSG graduate Adil Aouchiche—he should be able to develop into his new position.
Is there anything more you want Sunderland supporters to know about him?
He has scored for PSG and Bordeaux at the senior level despite being only 20 years old, proving that he can occasionally be a useful goal threat. Many wouldn’t anticipate him to have it in his arsenal.
