So far, Ross Chastain and the No. 1 team have had a successful or unsuccessful 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. Chastain has struggled to win races at the front of the field this season. Despite his constant performance, he will need a win this season. If he finishes the last eight races in the regular season, points alone will not allow him qualify for the playoffs.
Despite his winless record, Ross Chastain has the Cup Series garage’s second-best average finish (12.3). Notably, he is only second to HMS star Chase Elliott, but he has a win to back up his regular performance. So, what precisely does Chastain require to return to winning form? Well, the driver had a list of expectations for his crew immediately before the Nashville race on Sunday.
The No. 1 Chevy requires more speed and balance.
Chastain has only finished in the top ten and top five in eighteen starts this season. Rest assured, he has consistently finished in the top 15 positions, which has contributed to his statistics. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of consistent runs and speed, as demonstrated by another statistic. So far, the No. 1 Chevrolet has led 118 laps and won one stage.
But Chastain focused on the technical aspects of his race car, which he hopes to enhance. “Just a little extra speed. When we do a lap, whatever our current lap time is, if it could be a half-tenth faster, with a little more balance, more turn, and grip on entrance. Whatever that is, front or rear grip on exit,” he stated at a news conference prior of the Nashville race.
He went on to say that the aforementioned modifications and improvements would allow him to push and compete for top-place results, which would eventually lead to victory. “I feel like we’re a fairly consistent tenth-place car, and a good restart gets us to sixth, and a bad restart gets me to fourteenth. So, yeah, it’s just a tiny bit; it’s just crumbs now, which is what we’re hoping for to get to the top five, and then you see it. With top fives, you win and put yourself in position.
