The Philadelphia Phillies (65-45) appeared to be breaking their losing streak against the Seattle Mariners (59-53) in the first half of Saturday’s game. Instead, they discovered a new way to lose, recording their sixth consecutive loss, prompting some fans to panic.
With a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning, All-Star reliever Jeff Hoffman, who had been perfect this season, allowed four runs to tie the game. Carlos Estévez was unable to overcome loading the bases in the tenth inning after a hit. In fairness to him, he did not receive a strike-three call that should have finished the inning before walking in the winning run moments later.
“We’re just in a funk right now,” catcher J.T. Realmuto said following the stunning loss, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. “We are simply finding ways to lose games. It’s different every night.
The Phillies will try to salvage the series finale on Sunday and take the first step toward breaking out of their slump when they send ace Zack Wheeler to the mound. It would be beneficial to secure a win before travelling to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Dodgers.
Phillies versus. Mariners probable pitchers, August 4.
Zack Wheeler (10-5) will start for the Phillies. The right-hander enters with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP, following a 3.91 ERA in July. Wheeler’s last start was forgettable, as he gave up seven runs on seven hits to the Yankees in five innings.
Logan Gilbert (6-7) will take the ball for the Mariners. This season, the 27-year-old right-hander has a 3.11 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP through 22 starts. He had a 4.60 ERA in five July starts and, like Wheeler, gave up seven runs on seven hits in his last outing against the Red Sox, going only 2 2/3 innings.
