The Detroit Lions may have had assistance from an odd source during their victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night, when their jerseys blended in with the end zone and wall padding behind them.
Detroit, who won the game 26-20 in overtime, wore blue and silver uniforms that matched the end zone and neighbouring wall.
That colour clash appeared to effect Matthew Stafford during a first-half interception, when he was picked off in the end zone by Detroit’s Kerby Joseph.
The veteran Stafford put his hands on his head after making the blunder, with NFL expert Warren Sharp speculating that the incident occurred because the defence was camouflaged.
‘That’s some next-level stealth mode right there,’ one fan responded on X.
Like playing ‘Chameleon’ in Backyard Football,’ another person said.
‘Home Field Advantage,’ added another admirer.
‘How is this allowed? Another person commented, “The rules definitely need to be updated.” ‘A brilliant strategy, nevertheless.’
However, another fan claimed that Stafford’s inaccurate selection was a ‘panic’ throw with Lions’ Aidan Hutchinson coming off the edge.
The error proved costly, as the Rams went scoreless after a nine-play, 62-yard drive before halftime.
They led 20-17 in the fourth quarter but Detroit tied it with a late field goal and won in overtime on a David Montgomery touchdown.
Detroit will face the Buccaneers on Sunday, while the Rams will try to win their first game of the season against the Cardinals.
