HUGE MONEY SPLASH: Padres Make a Bold and Auducious Money Splash to Sign Four-Time All-Star From NY Mets to Boost World Series Ambition

Every day that goes by without an agreement being struck makes it less likely that the New York Mets will re-sign Pete Alonso. When it comes to offers, Alonso and the Mets are still far apart. The 2019 Rookie of the Year is already attracting interest from the San Francisco Giants, but are the San Diego Padres also interested in him? A.J. Preller, the general manager, isn’t scared to spend money.

Why Alonso for Machado is the Most Fun Trade That Won't Happen

He’s constantly looking for ways to develop a contender. The Padres may decide to spend a lot of money on a first baseman instead of an outfielder or infielder since Jurickson Profar and Ha-Seong Kim are both eligible for free agency. Since the Padres haven’t signed a free agent to a Major League contract this summer, Alonso joining the organization is very possible. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, Preller is trying to retool the lineup.

The Padres would be closer to the National League West throne if they signed Alonso, who averages 3.3 WAR annually. The Padres are one of the very few teams that can offer Alonso the kind of contract he desires. The upper part of the Padres lineup might resemble this if the lineup from Game 5 of the previous season’s NLDS were used:

1.Arraez Luis

2.Fernando Tatis Jr. Alonso, Pete

3.Machado, Manny

4.Merrill Jackson

With that lineup, very few pitchers would be successful. The Padres would be among the clubs to beat next season thanks to its exceptional power and on-base ability.
