JUST IN: 49ers GM John Lynch projected to take on over $31 million in dead money after the Deebo Samuel trade

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for a significant financial hit as they brace for over $31 million in dead money following the reported trade of star wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The move, which has yet to be finalized, signals a major shift for the franchise, both on the field and within their salary cap structure.

Samuel, a key playmaker for the 49ers since being drafted in 2019, has been an integral part of Kyle Shanahan’s offense, known for his versatility as both a receiver and a rusher. However, with the team looking to make financial adjustments and potentially add draft capital, parting ways with the dynamic wideout appears to be on the horizon.

According to salary cap experts, San Francisco would absorb a dead cap hit of approximately $31.5 million due to the structure of Samuel’s contract, which he signed in 2022. The deal, worth $71.6 million over three years, included a significant signing bonus, making the financial repercussions of a trade substantial.

Dead money is the remaining cap hit for a player who is no longer on a team’s roster but whose guaranteed salary and bonuses still count against the cap. In Samuel’s case, the acceleration of his prorated bonus money would create one of the largest dead cap hits in franchise history.

While the financial burden is steep, the 49ers could look to offset the impact by restructuring other contracts or strategically utilizing the draft to replenish their roster. Additionally, depending on the trade partner, San Francisco may negotiate for favorable compensation, including high draft picks or key players in return.

Samuel’s departure would leave a significant void in the offense, as he has been a focal point alongside tight end George Kittle and fellow wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. His ability to turn short passes into explosive plays and contribute in the running game has made him one of the most unique weapons in the NFL.

As trade talks progress, the 49ers must weigh the financial strain against the long-term benefits of moving on from Samuel. If the deal goes through, San Francisco will be forced to navigate one of the biggest salary cap challenges of the offseason.JUST IN:
