In a heartfelt and candid conversation, Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford — famously dubbed the “Metal God” — and his husband Thomas have shared personal insights about their relationship, their life together, and the importance of authenticity. The couple, who have been together for decades, say their openness is about more than their own happiness — it’s about helping others feel less alone.
Halford, one of heavy metal’s most iconic voices, publicly came out as gay in 1998, a decision he has described as “life-saving” and “liberating.” At the time, the music industry was far less accepting than it is today, and heavy metal was often seen as a hyper-masculine space. “I was terrified,” Halford recalled. “But hiding was exhausting. Once I came out, it felt like I could finally breathe.”

Thomas, who has largely stayed out of the public eye, said the couple’s private life is built on simple values — trust, humor, and mutual respect. “Rob is the Metal God on stage,” he said with a smile, “but at home, he’s just Rob — the man I love.”
The pair spoke openly about the pressures of fame and the challenge of balancing a demanding career with a committed relationship. Halford spends months each year touring the world, but they make time to reconnect, whether through quiet evenings at home or traveling together between shows.
They also reflected on how representation has changed over the years. “When we were younger, seeing an openly gay couple in music — especially in metal — was almost unheard of,” Halford said. “If sharing our story helps even one person feel comfortable in their own skin, then it’s worth it.”

Halford and Thomas stress that their love is no different from any other couple’s. They hope to inspire acceptance by living openly, proudly, and without apology. “At the end of the day, it’s about love,” Thomas said. “That’s all it’s ever been about.”
As Judas Priest continues to tour and Halford remains a towering figure in metal, the couple’s message is clear: authenticity is powerful, and living your truth can change not only your life — but the lives of others watching.
