The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 choice in the 2024 NFL Draft and are anticipated to select a quarterback. While the Commanders are unlikely to choose USC star Caleb Williams, they may move up in the draft if they believe he can make a difference. The Chicago Bears, who own the first pick in the draft, may trade it because Justin Fields could be the team’s future.
However, it is questionable whether the Bears will move on from Fields and choose Williams. If that is not the case, Washington may seek to trade for that choice. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon forecasted a return on the pick that would send Chicago the 2024 No. 2 pick, a 2024 second-round pick, and a 2025 third-round pick.
“The Washington Commanders have the No. 2 pick, but they may contemplate trading up to prevent another team from moving ahead of them to select whichever quarterback they want.

“No team has ever traded up from No. 2 before, but it would be gravy for the Bears if they’re good sticking with Fields and want to be certain they can land an elite non-quarterback like Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.”
Marvin Harrison Jr. is one of the country’s best receivers, so matching him with Fields if they do trade the pick makes sense. If Chicago slid to the second pick, they would be able to select him.
What is Caleb Williams’s price tag?
With the Bears keeping that choice, there hasn’t been much talk about dealing it. Williams is viewed as a generational quarterback, and in such scenario, either a large haul is required to secure the pick, or the team will simply draft the player.
In this case, we have an interesting situation. On the one side, Fields has shown to be above-average at times for the Chicago Bears. However, he has yet to consistently demonstrate that he can be one of the game’s elite quarterbacks, which Williams hopes to be.
Gagnon disputes the value, but acknowledges that it may cost more than he predicts considering that it is for a franchise quarterback.
“Because no team has ever risen from No. 2 to No. 1, it’s difficult to assess the worth here. According to the draft pick trade value table, the Commanders should owe the Bears no more than a second-round pick to make this exchange, but that has rarely been a useful tool for trades involving top picks with potential franchise quarterbacks in the mix.”

Caleb Williams Can Turn the Commanders Franchise Around
The Washington Commanders have not fared well during the last decade. Since 2000, the squad has made the playoffs five times but has yet to go past the divisional round. With new owner Josh Harris, Dan Quinn taking over as head coach, and Williams as a potential game changer, the future seems as bright as it has ever been.
Perhaps they believe Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye can be that player, but Williams has a generational look about him. During the 2023 college football season, he threw 3,633 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. That follows a season in which he threw for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Depending on the price from the Chicago Bears, this could be a wise move for the Commanders.
