The Cleveland Browns are aware that throughout the offseason, they will need to decide what to do with Nick Chubb. There is still disagreement as to when that will occur.
Chubb’s deal is the “elephant in the room,” as Browns general manager and executive vice president Andrew Berry acknowledged during his season-ending news conference. For the upcoming season, Chubb will count about $16 million against the cap. For any running back, let alone one who has just recovered from a serious knee ailment that required two surgeries, it is a difficult statistic to accept. If Chubb is released, the Browns may save $11.825 million.

But Chubb, who has already established himself as one of Cleveland’s all-time greats, is the team’s offensive engine. Chubb has gained 6,511 yards and 48 touchdowns over the past six seasons. His 5.3 yards per rush over his career is among the best in the league.
Although Berry doesn’t often talk about specific contracts, he did provide some insight on potential decision-making dates regarding Chubb and other players on the team.

According to Zac Jackson of The Atheltic, Berry stated on February 1 that “every situation is unique.” “There is a chance that certain financial decisions will be made prior to the NFL scouting combine, at the combine, or even after it. Thus, there isn’t a common playbook. We’ll have plenty time and energy to decide on the best course of action from a contractual perspective.
