ESPN BREAKING NEWS: Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton Issues Latest Update On Broncos S Justin Simmons

This summer, the Broncos could lose a few players at various positions. While safety does not appear to be one of them, Justin Simmons may still be a player to keep an eye on financially.
The two-time Pro Bowler has signed to a four-year, $61 million contract. Simmons has one year left on his contract and is due $14.5 million. None of that sum is guaranteed, and he will have a cap hit of $18.25MM in 2024. A move to reduce the latter figure could so take place.

Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post reports that “some action is likely” on Simmons’ contract. If the Broncos remain committed to the veteran ballhawk, that may mean a restructure or an extension. A trade would also provide financial flexibility, but Simmons’ absence would leave a significant roster gap on Denver’s defence. Given his longevity and production, it would be surprising if the Broncos actively sought to move on the former third-round pick.

Simmons recorded three interceptions, eight pass breakups, and two caused fumbles in 2023. These statistics helped him achieve second-team All-Pro honours for the fourth time in his career, proving his continuous ability to offer elite play. Now 30, another multi-year commitment would appear to be a safer investment for the Broncos than a number of other aging choices at the position.

As Gabriel points out, P.J. Locke is the only Broncos safety due to reach the open market in March. Making a transaction with Simmons would provide more financial certainty and could free up finances to keep Locke after he performed admirably as a replacement for Kareem Jackson. Aside from Simmons at safety, Denver has few proven commodities on its depth chart.

The Broncos were the subject of numerous trade rumours in the days leading up to the deadline, with wideouts Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton once again available. Simmons also got attention, but buyers chose not to take on the remainder of his contract. Denver is one of several clubs that are currently projected to exceed the salary limit, necessitating cost-cutting changes in the coming days and weeks. Moving on from Simmons is definitely something the Broncos want to avoid, but it will be worth watching to see if the sides can reach a new arrangement to ease the shock of his contract.
