The Houston Texans hope to build on an extraordinarily shocking season in 2023, when they won the AFC South and their first playoff game in five years.
With lots of cap space at their disposal and many critical positions on the roster already secured, the front office has plenty of money to spend on supplemental players.
One question was resolved today, as ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime reported that Houston has signed kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn to a three-year, $15.9 million agreement.
Fairbairn’s new contract places him among the top five highest-paid kickers in the NFL.
Fairbairn, 30, has been with the Texans for seven years, beginning as an undrafted free agent.
His accuracy has been exceptional over the last two seasons, with only three field goals missed, including 11-12 from 50 yards or more.
The only problem is his injury history, as he missed five games this season and four in 2021.
Granted, as a non-contact position, it is still worthwhile because most kicking injuries are a fluke.
This is Fairbairn’s second long-term contract with the Texans, having inked a four-year deal in 2020.
There are few things worse than pulling for an unreliable kicker in the NFL, so Texans fans can finally relax about this position for at least three years.
The team may now allocate its $70 million in cap space to other areas of need.
