Following Aaron Donald’s sudden retirement, the Los Angeles Rams have bolstered their defense by signing former Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White. ESPN reported on Tuesday that White had agreed to a one-year contract with the Rams worth up to £7.5 million ($10 million).
The 29-year-old played his first seven seasons with Buffalo and is still rehabbing from a damaged right Achilles. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Rams’ team doctor, performed White’s operation and has been assisting him in his recovery.
But, despite finding a new squad, White has only been offered a one-year contract due to his recent injury issues. This means that he may become a free agent again in just 12 months.
White soon established himself as a premier cornerback in the league. He was selected by the Bills in the 2017 NFL Draft and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting following his debut season.
In 2019, White led the NFL with six interceptions and was selected All-Pro and Pro Bowl starter. He made another Pro Bowl the following season and appeared in 61 games for Buffalo over his first four years in the league.
White hasn’t had much luck in recent years, owing to a string of catastrophic ailments. His 2021 season was cut short as he tore his ACL in a Week 12 game against the New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving. Then, just four games into the 2023 season, he tore his Achilles tendon.
Because the Bills did not have enough salary cap room, they had no choice but to release White. He joins a long list of excellent players Buffalo has forced to let go, including All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer, wide receiver Deonte Harty, running back Nyheim Hines, center Mitch Morse, and cornerback Siran Neal.
Sean McDermott, the Bills’ head coach, was quite upset by White’s departure, calling him “one of the best human beings I know.”
“You know it will happen eventually because of the length of an NFL player’s career. But that came way too soon in my mind, right?” McDermott stated, according to WKBW.
“I am confident in his thinking as well. It’s tragic in some respects for me because of the injuries. If the injuries hadn’t occurred, who knows where his time in Buffalo might have taken him and us. I believe he is one of the best defensive backs to ever play in Buffalo.”
“I really believe that,” McDermott stated. “He’s always in class. And he works his tail off. And he’s one of the best people I know. Given where he came from and how he has not only lifted himself but also his family and our club over the years, the injuries are a very tragic scenario in my opinion. Sorry, it’s hard to see him leave.”
White is now poised to join the Los Angeles Rams, where he will be teammates with Cobie Durant and the newly signed Darious Williams. It’s unclear what impact he’ll have after appearing in just 21 games over the last three seasons.
