GREAT SIGNING: Georgia Has Officially 2024 MAAC Rookie of the Year to roster

De’Shayne Montgomery, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year at Mount St. Mary’s last season, has signed a letter of intent to continue his scholastic career with the Georgia Bulldogs, head coach Mike White said Thursday.

Montgomery, a 6-4, 190-pound guard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., averaged 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and a team-high 1.7 steals per game for the Mountaineers. He received a school-record six MAAC Rookie of the Week awards, including each of the final four weeks of the season. Montgomery had nine 20-point games, including a season-high 27 points against Siena and a 23-point effort against Georgia on December 20. He placed 11th in scoring, 6th in field goal percentage (.528), 6th in steals, and 15th in free throw %.

Montgomery competed for Hargrave Military Academy’s postgraduate squad in the 2022-23 season. He averaged 16.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.8 steals while guiding the Tigers to a 44-2 record. Montgomery played two seasons of varsity basketball at Somerset Prep Academy Charter School, scoring 817 points (17.0 ppg), 332 rebounds (6.9 rpg), 218 assists (4.5 apg), 147 steals (3.1 spg), and 96 blocks (2.0 mpg) in 48 games. As a senior, he averaged 19.5 points per game, 6.1 mpg, 4.8 mpg, 2.9 spg, and 2.3 bpg, leading the Hurricanes to a 21-10 record and a spot in the Round of 16 in the 2022 FHSAA 3A state championship. Montgomery earned second-team All-Broward County honours from the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel as a senior.

Montgomery is the second newcomer on Georgia’s 2024-25 roster. Last October, the Bulldogs signed Asa Newell, a 6-10, 215-pound power forward from Destin, Fla., who was listed as the No. 8 overall talent in the 247Sports.com composite list of Class of 2024 prep prospects.

The 2024-25 season will be the Bulldogs’ third under head coach Mike White. During his first season, Georgia increased its regular-season victory total by ten, the second-largest improvement of any Power conference team. Last season, the Bulldogs got to the NIT semifinals, finishing with 20 wins for the first time since 2016.
