The Auburn Tigers made an offer to the son of a former player that no Auburn fan will soon forget.
Chris “CJ” Davis III, a member of the 2028 class, is the son of Auburn great “kick six” Chris Davis. Davis III is a running back entering his freshman year in high school.

Chris Davis, an Auburn Tigers cornerback who never recorded an interception in his four years of college football, is a name that Tigers fans will never forget.
Davis cemented his place as an Auburn icon with his game-winning performance against the renowned Alabama Crimson Tide, coached by recently retired head coach Nick Saban.
Initially, time was declared to have expired as Alabama attempted a last-second field goal, but Saban disputed the call, giving himself and his squad a last-second opportunity at a 57-yard field goal.
The kick came up short and landed in the hands of Chris Davis, who then executed one of the most incredible plays in sports history. Davis twisted his way around Alabama’s and goal unit and tightroped his way down the sideline to seal the victory for Auburn as time expired.
A last-second, 109-yard field goal return dashed the hopes and dreams of a No. 1 overall Alabama Crimson Tide team in the Iron Bowl. Davis was immortalized in college football history books for one of the most unlikely and thrilling plays in the sport’s history.
The call from an Auburn Tigers radio announcer confirmed the Davis name as legendary.
While most fans were listening to Verne Lundquist on CBS during the memorable play, the call from Auburn commentator Rod Bramblett will live in infamy.
Bramblett’s emotional shout, known as the “there goes Davis” call, ensured that Davis’ name would be eternally associated with the play.
Similarly, memorable plays like “The Play” between the Cal Golden Bears and the Stanford Cardinal while the band was on the field, or the Fiesta Bowl deception by the Boise State Broncos in 2007, contain players whose identities have long been forgotten.
The nature of Bramblett’s epic call ensures that Davis’ name will be remembered. In an article published on the Auburn Tigers’ website, Bramblett detailed how the call changed his life.
“I said there was no way the Alabama game could exceed the Georgia game. There is no way. “I was wrong.”
“Some days it seems like it was a decade ago, and some days it seems like it was yesterday,” Bramblett stated. “Everywhere I’m fortunate enough to go speak, people want to talk about that game.”
If Davis III decides to continue his father’s tradition with the Tigers, the name will become even more memorable.
Chris Davis III has alternatives outside the Auburn Tigers.
Davis III, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound running back who will not graduate until 2028, is considering choices other than his father’s alma university.
Davis III’s initial offer was from former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who is currently the head coach of the UCF Knights. The son of the Auburn icon has also received offers from the Florida State Seminoles and the Arkansas Razorbacks.
There is no doubt that the majority of Auburn fans will want Davis III to continue his father’s legacy, but he will also have the opportunity to establish his own as a running back for major college football programs.
