The Las Vegas Raiders have a “ugly” quarterback situation, but a new report claims they could resolve it with a trade deadline transaction. The Raiders’ 2-6 record this season is attributed in large part to erratic quarterback play. Both Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew have started this season, but neither has made a meaningful contribution.
They have eight touchdowns and ten interceptions, averaging 209.1 yards per game overall. Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report described their quarterback situation as “ugly,” pointing out that neither O’Connell nor Minshew appear to be starting quarterbacks. “It couldn’t be clearer that both Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O’Connell are top-notch backups at best for a team that must start from scratch under centre,” Gagnon pointed out. Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News speculated that the Raiders might fix the matter now by trading for Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. Iyer hinted it may be a long-term decision, allowing Fields to play with a rookie next season.
“The Raiders have their eyes on Shedeur Sanders and other top QB prospects in the 2025 draft, but it would make sense to take a shot on Fields to pair with his former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy,” according to Iyer. “The Steelers may not want to break up their ideal backup/starter situation with Russell Wilson and Fields, but they could be motivated to flip the latter if they get a great offer.” Fields started six games for the Steelers this season and went 4-2, but he has since been benched in favour of Russell Wilson.
