The San Diego Padres have all the talent in the world. Could they use even more?
Padres add Jose Iglesias to rich hitting order, according to FA predictions.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter predicts that former New York Mets infielder Jose Iglesias would sign with the Padres this winter. Reuter said this about the duo (h/t Jackson Roberts of The Sporting News):
“With Luis Arraez and Jake Cronenworth both capable of manning either spot on the right side of the infield, and Xander Bogaerts lining up at both middle infield spots, the Padres could go a lot of different routes with who they target,” according to Reuter.
“Veteran Jose Iglesias would give them a solid defender with elite contact skills who can serve as a second leadoff hitter out of the No. 9 spot in the order.”
Padres: Iglesias was more efficient than words in 2024.
Iglesias is effective both offensively and defensively. In his 12th Major League season in 2024, the 34-year-old recorded an uber-efficient.337/.381/.448 slash line for the Mets. He also scored 39 runs in 85 games and had an impressive.830 OPS.
Iglesias may offer the Padres a strong fielding and offensive boost in 2025.
During the regular season, the Cuban talent played second base, third base, and shortstop. He totaled 91 putouts, 156 assists, and 38 double plays while making only three errors.
He recently signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with New York ahead of the 2024 season. Thus, Iglesias might be a low-cost addition that provides San Diego with a veteran bat to supplement the back half of their hitting order while also providing near-perfect infield playing. He might also spark the Padres’ lineup after having an underappreciated but captivating impact on the Mets throughout the regular season and playoffs.
