Several Serie A clubs, notably AC Milan, are allegedly interested in Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.
Since sliding down the pecking order under manager Erik ten Hag, the 30-year-old has been widely linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
In central defense, Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof are all preferred to Maguire, who started just eight Premier League games last season.
After being stripped of his captaincy in the summer, Maguire was expected to join West Ham United on a permanent or loan basis, but a transfer to the London Stadium never materialized.
Maguire has now started just two of Man United’s 11 games in all competitions this season, and the defender recently stated that if he continues to play “once every month,” he may consider leaving.
West Ham are reportedly still interested in Maguire, but they may face competition for his signature, as talkSPORT reports that AC Milan are among many Serie A clubs keeping a close eye on the defender’s position.
Maguire might follow in the footsteps of former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, who has renewed his career in Italy with Roma after sliding down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Tammy Abraham points out that Smalling is not the only Englishman working in Italy.
is also representing Roma, while Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are teammates at Milan.
Since leaving Chelsea in 2021, Tomori has established himself as a first-team regular with the Rossoneri, appearing in 116 games across all competitions, including 45 last season.
Meanwhile, Loftus-Cheek moved from Stamford Bridge to San Siro in the summer and has played eight times in midfield, including five Serie A starts.
It’s unclear whether Maguire, who has just under two years left on his Manchester United deal, would be interested in a move abroad at this point in his career.
The speculation about Maguire’s future comes as the Red Devils are rumored to be looking for a new central defense.
Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio is thought to be one of their top targets ahead of the New Year, though Maguire’s future is said to affect whether or not United pursue the 22-year-old.
Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has also emerged as a possible target for the Red Devils, while Benfica’s Antonio Silva, Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Maguire’s teammate Lindelof has indicated his wish to stay at Manchester United and has stated that the club is “quite likely” to retain him.
