Daniel Jones is now officially a Minnesota Viking. On Friday, the Vikings formally confirmed the signing of Jones and rookie edge Gabriel Murphy, whom the organization had dismissed just a few days earlier. Jones and Murphy were added to the practice squad.
Jones has 70 NFL games of experience to Minnesota, having completed 64.1% of his throws for 14,582 yards and 70 touchdowns to 47 interceptions. He hopes to revive his career with the Vikings, as Sam Darnold has done this season.
Murphy hasn’t played in an NFL game because he was on injured reserve until earlier this week. To make room for them on the practice squad, the Vikings had to dismiss two players and part ways with veteran tight end Robert Tonyan and offensive tackle Julian Pearl. Pearl was never active for the Vikings after joining the team this season, but Tonyan did play in five games.
The former Chicago Bear and Green Bay Packer impressed in training camp and was frequently active early in the season as T.J. Hockenson recovered from ACL surgery. Tonyan, on the other hand, played very little on offence, with only 15 offensive snaps and no catches in five games. Tonyan became disposable as Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt, and Nick Muse returned to health.
