Jack Flaherty was an integral part of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2024 World Series victory. Flaherty arrived at the trade deadline and anchored an ailing Dodgers rotation down the stretch. With Los Angeles the favourite to snag Roki Sasaki after signing Blake Snell earlier this winter, Flaherty’s return to the Dodgers appears unlikely.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly has proposed that the San Diego Padres consider pursuing Flaherty. Stealing a star from a division rival would be an excellent method for the Padres to gain ground in the National League West. “Dylan Cease has been considered as a trade candidate throughout the offseason.
Given that he is entering his contract year, this is not surprising, especially since he might seek more than $200 million next offseason,” Kelly noted. “If San Diego general manager A.J. Preller makes one huge subtraction like that, he’s unlikely to rest on his laurels considering how competitive the NL West is. If you move Cease, adding Flaherty on a multi-year contract would be an excellent pivot.” This proposal would make a lot more sense if the Padres could successfully deal Dylan Cease.
Cease is likely to be shopped, but this is not guarantee that it will be transferred. If Cease leaves, the Padres could sign Flaherty to a three or four-year contract while also benefiting from a prospect haul for their current ace. It makes a lot of sense, but San Diego would have to win a bidding battle for the Dodgers’ superstar.
