LOS ANGELES – A stunning scandal has rocked Major League Baseball as federal prosecutors have accused Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, of exploiting the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar in an alleged financial fraud scheme.
In a press conference on Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada condemned Mizuhara’s actions, calling them a “shocking betrayal” of trust. “He preyed on the goodwill of one of baseball’s biggest stars, manipulating him for personal financial gain,” Estrada said.
Mizuhara, who had been by Ohtani’s side since his arrival in Major League Baseball, is accused of siphoning millions from the two-way sensation’s personal accounts without his knowledge. The allegations stem from an investigation into a broader illegal gambling operation, in which Mizuhara allegedly funneled Ohtani’s money to cover his own massive betting debts.
According to court filings, Mizuhara had unfettered access to Ohtani’s financial accounts, a privilege he allegedly abused to make unauthorized wire transfers totaling millions of dollars. Investigators say Ohtani, who signed a record-breaking $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December, had no idea his trusted interpreter was misusing his funds.
“This was not a case of a financial dispute between friends. This was theft, plain and simple,” Estrada emphasized. “Mizuhara took advantage of his unique position and personal relationship with Ohtani to commit fraud.”
Ohtani, known for his humility and focus on baseball, has remained largely silent on the matter. However, his legal team has confirmed that he is fully cooperating with authorities and is considered a victim.
Mizuhara was abruptly fired by the Dodgers last month after the allegations first surfaced. He now faces federal fraud charges, which could lead to significant prison time if convicted.
The shocking revelations have sent ripples through the sports world, with fans and analysts alike expressing outrage over the betrayal. As the case unfolds, Ohtani remains focused on leading the Dodgers in the 2025 season, determined to put the scandal behind him.
