“What an insane overpay”: Vikings Have Officially Sign Colts Offensive Guard For Five Years and $88 million Blockbuster Deal

Minneapolis, MN – The Minnesota Vikings are making waves in free agency, but not everyone is thrilled about their latest move. The team has officially signed former Indianapolis Colts offensive guard Quenton Nelson to a massive five-year, $88 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid guards in the NFL.

While Nelson is widely regarded as a dominant interior lineman, many around the league—and even within the Vikings fanbase—are questioning whether Minnesota overpaid for his services.

Nelson, a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro, has been a force in the trenches since entering the league in 2018. However, recent injuries and inconsistent play have led some to believe that his best years may be behind him.

With an average annual salary of $17.6 million, Nelson’s new deal places him among the top-paid guards in NFL history. The contract includes $54 million in guaranteed money, a hefty investment for a Vikings team looking to retool its offensive line.

While the Vikings’ offensive line needed an upgrade, some analysts believe the team paid too steep a price for Nelson, who is coming off a season where he allowed four sacks, the most in his career.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called the move “a bold but risky commitment,” while ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky questioned the team’s financial strategy.

“Nelson is still a solid player, but this is a monumental overpay for a guy who has had durability concerns,” Orlovsky said. “Minnesota could have spread that money across multiple positions instead of locking it all into one guard.”

Fans echoed similar frustrations on social media. One Vikings fan posted, “We just spent almost $90 million on a GUARD? Kirk (Cousins) better not take a single sack next season.”

Despite the backlash, Minnesota’s front office sees Nelson as a game-changer for their offensive line. The team struggled to protect the quarterback last season, allowing 40 sacks, and is looking to build a more physical presence up front.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell defended the signing, saying, “We want to establish a dominant offensive line, and Quenton is a huge piece of that puzzle. He brings leadership, toughness, and championship experience.”

Whether Nelson lives up to his contract remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—the Vikings just made one of the biggest free-agent splashes of the offseason.
