The Rams have officially dismissed kicker Brett Maher after he missed three attempts in the team’s 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Multiple reports on Tuesday indicated that Maher, who missed two field goals and an extra point in the Week 7 loss, would be released by the Rams.
According to ESPN NFL analyst Adam Schefter, Los Angeles was waiting for Maher’s successor before officially releasing him. After reporting Maher’s dismissal, Schefter announced that the Rams planned to sign former Colts kicker Lucas Havrisik off the Browns’ practice squad.
This is the same Maher that missed four of five extra-point tries against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Cowboys’ Wild Card Game on Jan. 16, 2023. Maher’s dreadful day at the office set a record, as his playoff campaign ended with the most missed extra points in a game (regular season or playoffs) since extra points were originally counted in 1932.
Maher’s problems resurfaced nine months later. Maher has made 16 of 20 tries (80%) and was a perfect 12-of-12 on extra points entering Sunday’s game. However, those previous misses were overshadowed by the fact that they came in the middle of two wins, both of which the Rams were able to overcome. The Rams were unable to overcome his several gaffes.
The NFL world reacted quickly to the Rams’ huge roster change.
