According to today’s Northern Echo, Felix Nmecha, a former midfielder for Manchester City, was being considered by Newcastle prior to his summer transfer from Wolfsburg to Dortmund.
The player was reportedly the target of scouts from Newcastle, who sent them to watch him play for Wolfsburg on multiple occasions.
The 6′ 3″ midfielder, who last night in the Champions League scored the game-winning goal, eventually signed with Dortmund.
That came after Newcastle decided to search elsewhere and eventually signed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. It appears that Tonali will serve a 10-month ban from the Italian FA for engaging in unlawful gambling.
Within the next 24 to 48 hours, that ban is expected to be announced.
Although Tonali made a brief appearance for 20 minutes last night, that will likely be the last time we see him this season.
Nmecha, a German international, has taken some time to get used to life at Dortmund, but on Wednesday night, Eddie Howe made it clear that Newcastle is still interested in him:
“Nmecha is a player we observed and found quite appealing,” “Yes, he is clearly a Dortmund player now, though.”
Was it our fault that someone else was obtained in its place? Nothing is ever as easy as that.
Nmecha thrilled head coach of Dortmund Edin Terzic last night:
“Felix is an exceptional player,” “We are aware of his talent and potential, and we knew he could raise our level of play.”
“He played a great game and got the goal at the end. In the season’s opening games, he had plenty of chances to do that.
He played a more attacking role, so it was a little different for him. Although he had a challenging beginning in Dortmund, he is currently in excellent form.
“We face each other again in a couple of weeks, and that is going to be a very important game,” said the player in 50%(3) of the group games that were played. “It is just half-time.”
“I thought we played great in the first half, and we really got into a fight in the second half.”
“We held onto our lead in the second half, and we earned it in the first.”
Newcastle will not pursue Nmecha at this point, but regardless of whether we make it to the Champions League knockout stages or not, we will need to add players in January due to the injuries to Isak, Murphy, and Anderson.
To be honest, we had a bit of bad luck against a very strong team last night.
Let’s not get too depressed, even though after last night’s game I was feeling a little down.
We’ll be ready for the League Cup match at Old Trafford on Wednesday if we win at Wolves.
