The Detroit Lions have made significant defensive improvements in recent years, but one area still jumps out: edge rusher depth.
After moving on from Za’Darius Smith earlier this offseason, Detroit is now back in familiar territory, with Aidan Hutchinson bearing the majority of the work off the edge. While Hutchinson has rapidly emerged as one of the league’s best pass rushers, he cannot do it alone. And, with the NFL Draft only a few weeks away, there’s mounting speculation that a seasoned option already exists: Matthew Judon.
Why Matthew Judon Makes Sense For The Lions
Let’s be honest: Judon isn’t the same player that racked up double-digit sacks in consecutive seasons a few years ago. But he still adds experience, toughness, and leadership, all of which would be valuable assets to the Lions’ young defense.
At 31 years old, Judon had a relatively quiet 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, recording 5.5 sacks and 25 quarterback pressures in 17 games. Not eye-popping figures, but they don’t convey the whole story. Judon was coming off an injury-plagued 2023 season and nevertheless managed to play every week in 2024.
Could we see a comeback to form in 2025? Playing opposite Hutchinson could be just what he needs to rekindle that Pro Bowl spark.
The price is right.
One of the primary reasons Judon-to-Detroit makes so much sense is the possible cost savings.
According to Spotrac, Judon is expected to accept a two-year contract worth $8.4 million, which equates to just $4.2 million per year for a player who has made four Pro Bowl appearances. That’s nearly a value in today’s pass rusher market, especially for a team seeking to win now while maintaining future cap flexibility.
Bottom line.
This isn’t about bringing in a superstar to dominate games. It’s about bringing in a knowledgeable veteran who can assist Aidan Hutchinson, gobble up important reps, and deliver when it counts the most — particularly during the playoffs.
Judon’s resume speaks for itself, and if Brad Holmes wants to continue the Lions’ upward trend, a low-risk, high-reward deal like this could be the perfect fit.
