Ahead of their Champions League matchup against Newcastle United, AC Milan is concerned about Olivier Giroud’s health after the Frenchman was forced to leave a match with an injury. The former Arsenal striker played for 25 minutes in the EURO 2024 qualifier before leaving France’s 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland.
Aurelien Tchouameni’s opening goal for Les Bleus after 19 minutes put them ahead by one. After receiving treatment for his ankle before starting the game, Giroud signaled to the bench and requested to be removed after sliding in to catch a cross from Milan teammate Theo Hernandez.
Later this month, the Frenchman will be 37, and he has had a strong start to the Serie A season with four goals and one assist in just three games. Marcus Thuram, a former Newcastle “target,” took his place, and he is questionable for the match against the Magpies later this month.
On September 19, Eddie Howe’s team will play their first Champions League group stage match at the San Siro, marking their return to the competition after a 20-year absence. In the competition’s group of death, the Magpies face off against Milan, PSG, and Borussia Dortmund.
Last season, Sandro Tonali, a summer acquisition from Newcastle, helped AC Milan go to the semi-finals. Just a few months after quitting his boyhood club, the Italian will make a tearful return to the San Siro.
On their journey, the Magpies want to leave a mark and show that they’re more than simply a faceless face in the crowd. Giroud’s participation is still up in the air at this point.
