BREAKING NEWS: Cowboys names a new head coach for Sunday night clash vs. Eagles

Mike McCarthy’s appendectomy last week will not prevent him from coaching this weekend.

On a conference call with reporters on Friday, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett indicated that his coaching duties will not be hampered on the sidelines against Philadelphia.

“I’m feeling good,” McCarthy stated. “And I anticipate everything staying normal come Sunday night.”

McCarthy sought medical attention after developing acute appendicitis on Wednesday, and he underwent surgery to address the problem. After McCarthy’s coordinating lieutenants ran Wednesday’s practice, the coach was expected to return for a crucial game against the division-rival Eagles on Sunday.

“You always miss the guys,” McCarthy said, referring to missing practice. “The hardest part about being away is missing the players and coaches, but the only game plan meeting I missed was a short-yardage and goal-line meeting.” We’d done a red zone preview the night before, so I wasn’t worried about missing any of the game plan. However, you do not want to be here if you are not present. I was eager to return. It felt great to walk into here today. We held the meeting virtually. It was different because it was virtual, but we accomplished everything we normally accomplish on a Thursday night.”

McCarthy has the Cowboys cooking this season, with an offense that has been remarkably explosive, so much so that Dak Prescott has entered the NFL Most Valuable Player conversation after throwing for 250-plus passing yards in six of their last seven games, with a 21-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Dallas has only lost once in that span, a 28-23 defeat in Philadelphia in early November.

With their coach back in the lineup, they’ll look to avenge that loss and tie the NFC East race at the top of the standings with a month to go.
