Sweat was traded by the Washington Commanders to the Chicago Bears ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Oct. 31, and he has now appeared in five games for his new team. Sweat was exchanged for a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft by the Commanders.
Sweat signed a four-year, $98 million extension with the Bears four days after the trade. However, since Sweat’s arrival, the Bears are 3-2 (5-8 on the season), and the defense looks significantly different. Sweat has 12 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 10 QB hits in those five games.
Sweat had one sack and a career-high four quarterback hits in Sunday’s win over the Detroit Lions. Sweat praised Chicago coach Matt Eberflus after the game while also criticizing his former team.
“Where I come from, it was kind of like just waiting on the season to end,”
Sweat stated.
That’s something I’ve never seen before: a head coach running the team and calling defensive plays. It’s also another slam dunk for current Washington head coach Ron Rivera. Sweat was well-liked by his Commanders teammates and coaches.
Sweat could have been referring to multiple seasons based on how Washington has finished in recent seasons. Watching the Commanders play this season, it’s clear they’re counting down the days until the season is over.
In an attempt to salvage a disappointing season, the Chicago Bears acquired defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders. But that hasn’t happened, as the Bears have only won one of their three games with Sweat on the field, falling to a 3-8 record on the season.
Sweat has 1.0 sack, four tackles (three solo), four quarterback hits, and one tackle for loss in three games with Chicago, and he hasn’t played in the majority of their defensive snaps during that time.
Sweat isn’t some average or slightly above-average player who should be platooned with specific teammates; he was a first-round pick in 2019 and one of the more sought-after defensive players on the trade market prior to the trade deadline.
This season, the Bears rank 26th in passing yards allowed, 29th in points allowed, and 30th in passing touchdowns allowed, despite forcing three interceptions in their loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
