Martinez has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or after helping Argentina win the World Cup, but the Aston Villa goalkeeper believes Messi will win the accolade after captaining his country to victory in 2022. Erling Haaland, who scored 52 goals for Manchester City last season, is likely his only serious opponent, but Martinez believes Messi will add a seventh Ballon d’Or to his incredible prize collection.

Some may claim that Messi has not matched Haaland’s club achievements in the last calendar year, despite the fact that the Norwegian international won the treble with City last season and was instrumental in their triumph. However, Messi’s biggest achievement was winning the World Cup, and he was once again the star in Qatar, so it’s no wonder that his compatriot is confident he’ll beat the competition.
