The Philadelphia Phillies have had a drastically different offseason this cycle than in previous years, after landing their No. 1 target early on and then sitting back with little action. Overall, free agency in the MLB is crowded with teams looking for players who will improve their team in the short term and position them to prosper. The majority of the thought process at this time period is focused on acquiring high-profile players who are stars.
Fans want hope, clubs want to improve, and nothing promotes optimism for the upcoming season like acquiring exceptional players. However, teams employ free agency for other purposes as well. Those that already have a ready-made roster, such as the Phillies, want to add winning elements who can play in a limited manner. After re-signing Aaron Nola, this Philadelphia club doesn’t need much to compete.
Former MLB executive Jim Bowden believes they may target three-time All-Star and current utilityman Whit Merrifield as a lineup and defensive versatility addition.
“I think the Phillies could land a versatile, right-handed-hitting player such as Whit Merrifield or Tony Kemp who could play both the infield and outfield,” he said. Merrifield is coming off an All-Star season with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, when he hit.272/.318/.382 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI in 145 games. He’d be an excellent addition to the bench unit, providing strong hitting. The 34-year-old veteran is also a diligent worker who should fit right in with the clubhouse mentality.
It would be fascinating to watch how much money Merrifield seeks after becoming a free agent, but perhaps the prospect of competing for a title with the Phillies will reduce his asking price.
