There are still spots open on the Boston Celtics’ roster, and one well-known player is hoping they will keep him on. Austin Rivers, a former guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is currently an unrestricted free agent, but at 31 he still has value.
Rivers, who is the son of Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, is well familiar with the team. It appears that he has been following Boston and its staff, despite the fact that he was only a teenager when his father assisted in leading the C’s to a championship in 2008.
As reported by The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rivers praised Brad Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations. Even more recently, he spoke with the former Celtics coach to negotiate a prospective employment arrangement.
Austin Rivers remarked, “I really had a fantastic conversation with Brad about a week ago. I expressed my desire to join the team when I told him. He was quite encouraging in his speech. If that happens, it will be interesting to see. I have always adored Brad. He’s someone I’ve liked forever.
Rivers’ spot on the roster is now rather limited. He would most certainly be surpassed on the depth chart by guards like Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Malcolm Brogdon. Brogdon may be replaced by Rivers at the start of the season, though, if his injury problems don’t get better.
Austin Rivers participated in 52 games with Minnesota, playing 19.5 minutes per game and scoring 4.9 points on average. Despite having unremarkable numbers, he can still shoot the ball at a respectable rate, and given his experience, he may be more receptive to a role at the back of the bench.
