BREAKING NEWS: The commanders are set to announce their new head coach as they have come to contract agreement with NFL statistically best Offensive Coordinator

Adam Peters has already been appointed as the Washington Commanders’ new general manager, but a head coach will still need to be hired in order to oversee the team’s roster building for the 2024 campaign.

Although the organization has previously interviewed a number of candidates for head coach, BetOnline.ag (via Jaime Eisner) indicates that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is the front-runner to take the position.

Following Peters’ appointment as general manager, there was talk that Johnson might be considered for a head coaching position. This might happen even as his Lions prepare to play the 49ers in Sunday’s NFC championship game.
With quarterback Jared Goff at the centre, two explosive running backs in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, and two excellent pass catchers in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and tight end Sam LaPorta, Johnson helped assemble one of the finest offensive units in the NFL this season.

This past offseason, Johnson was also a highly sought-after candidate for head coach, but he chose to stay in Detroit. It was a wise move, as the Lions went on to win the NFC North and are currently one game away from their first Super Bowl appearance.
It is unclear if this hiring will take place before or after the NFC championship game, but Johnson might be moving to Washington after his success as a Detroit coordinator.

Even if the Commanders had the No. 2 selection in the draft that they could use on a quarterback and some excellent offensive skill, he wouldn’t have nearly as good of a squad.
