An update on the Garrett Crochet trade rumours bolsters the Baltimore Orioles’ and New York Yankees’ ambitions to make a big deal for the strikeout machine.
The Yankees and Orioles are locked in a fierce battle for first place in the American League East when the MLB games begin today. The two AL powerhouses have swapped positions throughout the season, and the Orioles presently lead the AL East competition.
No matter who wins the division, the two teams are likely to meet battle in the 2024 MLB playoffs, and boosting their rosters for a matchup in October is a major priority before the MLB trade deadline on July 30. The two teams have been linked to a number of players in recent weeks, including Chicago White Sox ace pitcher Garrett Crochet.

However, with the 25-year-old’s potential to be a league ace and remaining under team control for a few more seasons, he is expected to come at a hefty cost for interested clubs. However, a fresh update on the situation provides a significant boost to Baltimore and New York’s chances of signing the brilliant hurler.
Earlier this week, USA Today MLB source Bob Nightengale reported: “The White Sox quietly engaged in brief contract extension talks with ace Garrett Crochet, but with no hope of reaching an agreement, the White Sox intend to trade him before the July 30 trade deadline.”
Garrett Crochet stats (2024): 6-6 record, 3.02 ERA, 0.928 WHIP, 141 SO, 20 BB, 101.1 innings.
That is not to say that transferring him is a guarantee, but Crochet’s value is at an all-time high, and being under contract until 2026 only adds to it. Chicago could certainly wait until the winter or next season to move him, but if the pitcher is not planning to re-sign, trading him now may be their best chance to obtain a good return for the starter.
The key question for interested teams, including the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, is whether Crochet will finish the season in the bullpen. His 94 innings are by far the most in his career. However, Nightengale believes that granting a contract extension may encourage the pitcher to continue playing as a starter for the rest of the season.
