The signing of former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers by the Pittsburgh Steelers seems almost certain at this time.

Barring Rodgers reconsidering his decision to play in 2025, the Steelers give the three-time MVP his greatest chance of starting this season.

However, after two controversial and unproductive seasons with the New York Jets, it appears that 31 other clubs are passing on Rodgers, both because of his poor performance on the field and his parade of distractions off it in recent seasons.

“The Jets tried to put everything on Aaron,” a veteran NFL personnel executive told me recently. “In theory, that’s what he’s capable of, or so he believes. But I’ve got to tell you that three-quarters of the time, he’s washed up. Aaron will offer you a glimpse around once in a quarter. Three-quarters of the time, no way.

The confrontation, which unfolded during last Sunday’s high-stakes matchup, saw tempers flare between Rodgers and several Steelers defenders after a late hit sent the veteran QB crashing to the turf. While Rodgers managed to walk off under his own power, sources say the league office wasn’t pleased — not with the hit, and certainly not with the Steelers’ response.

According to league insiders, NFL executives contacted the Steelers organization early Monday morning with what one source called a “clear and brutal message”: clean it up, or face serious consequences. The warning reportedly referenced escalating tensions, unsportsmanlike conduct, and a growing reputation for borderline play.

“This isn’t just about one hit,” the insider said. “This is about a pattern. And the NFL is making it very clear — disaster awaits if the Steelers don’t course-correct.”

While the league has yet to publicly comment, the strong behind-the-scenes message suggests potential fines, suspensions, or even draft implications could be on the table if further incidents occur. The Steelers’ front office has remained tight-lipped, though head coach Mike Tomlin brushed off the controversy during a press conference, stating, “We play hard. We play fair. That’s the standard.”

Still, the NFL’s tone reportedly shifted into crisis mode once Rodgers — one of the league’s most marketable stars — was involved. Protecting quarterbacks, particularly high-profile ones, remains a top league priority.

Rodgers, for his part, didn’t hold back. “They better tighten up,” he said in a postgame interview. “We’ll see them again. And I don’t forget.”

With the league watching closely and tensions high, all eyes are now on the Steelers — and what could become a season-defining moment. One wrong move, and the consequences may be far more devastating than a loss on the scoreboard.
