The Padres released this comment from Merrill after he signed a nine-year, $135 million contract on Wednesday (via MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell):

“The Padres were the first team to contact me, scout me, and believe in me from the beginning. Merrill stated, “A.J.’s [Preller] has been by my side and my biggest supporter.” ” I knew I wanted to stay here indefinitely after the first conversation I had with him.
My goal is to win. To dominate on the field with my sons. I’m simply glad I got to do it for a long time.
Merrill is headed for superstardom amid a massive deal.

By then, Merrill will be up for another lucrative contract in the thick of his prime.
. Merrill will be in the midst of his prime, ready for another hefty contract.
So far in 2025, the Padres have an immaculate 7-0 record, thanks in great part to the lefty hitter’s performances. Merrill hopes to use this year as a springboard for his future success.
