JUST IN: The Tigers Continue To Add Depth This Offseason – Tigers Sign Former Cubs Top prolific Star to a one year deal .

The Detroit Tigers made some sly offseason moves to improve their team ahead of the 2024 season. The Tigers signed Mark Canha and Kenta Maeda, two respected veterans in the league, in the early part of the offseason.

They signed former Chicago Cubs reliever Andrew Chafin on Sunday. The purchase price is $4.25 million. According to Evan Petzold, incentives of up to $1.25 million will be available in 2024.

Chafin, who previously played for the Detroit Tigers, spent time in 2023 with the Arizona Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. His ERA was 4.73 last season, which was a drop from the previous year. That was nearly two runs higher than his 2.83 ERA with the Tigers in 2022.

Chafin spent parts of the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Cubs. Despite his brief tenure, he had a 3.00 ERA in 2020 and a 2.06 ERA in 2021.

Detroit gains an experienced reliever who is well-known within the organization. If Chafin can regain his pre-2023 form, it becomes a win-win situation for both parties.

During the offseason, Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris informed reporters that the team was looking for a left-handed reliever. According to The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen, Harris said the following.

“I think we have some opportunity to add to our pen if we find the right piece,” Harris went on to say. “And if we don’t, we still have Tyler Holton, who is really helpful.”

Chafin joins the team as their second left-hander and has the potential to play a significant role in the bullpen.
