The Chicago Blackhawks are making a major move in their rebuilding efforts, as the franchise is set to finalise the signing of former New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant to a four-year deal, sources confirmed on Monday. The agreement, which is expected to be officially announced within days, will make Gallant the third highest-paid coach in the NHL.
Gallant, 60, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success behind the bench. Most recently, he led the New York Rangers to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Final in 2022. Known for his ability to quickly turn teams into contenders, Gallant also previously coached the Vegas Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season.

The Blackhawks have been in the midst of a rebuilding phase, but with the emergence of rookie sensation Connor Bedard and a promising young core, the organization is clearly looking to accelerate its timeline. Hiring Gallant signals the front office’s intent to surround its young stars with elite leadership and competitive expectations.
Gallant’s four-year contract is reportedly worth north of $20 million, putting him just behind Jon Cooper (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins) on the list of highest-paid NHL coaches. It’s a strong statement from a franchise that has been patient with its rebuild but is now ready to push forward.
In a brief statement, Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said, “Gerard Gallant is a leader of men, and his track record speaks for itself. We believe he’s the right coach to guide this team through the next chapter.”

Gallant is expected to be introduced at a press conference later this week, where he will outline his vision for the Blackhawks’ future. With a proven coach now in place, the spotlight turns to the ice as Chicago looks to rise once again among the NHL’s elite.
Can Gallant bring Stanley Cup contention back to Chicago? Fans are eager to find out.
